     Η έννοια της πρόβλεψης του μέλλοντος είναι ένα μεγάλο ζητούμενο στην καθημερινή ζωή του ανθρώπου. Ο φόβος γι’ αυτό που επιφυλάσσει η προσωπική και οικογενειακή ζωή, για τις επιπτώσεις του χρόνου, του ενιαυτού, των εποχών, του Καιρού οδηγούν σε μια σειρά από πράξεις και ενέργειες, που βασίζονται σε εδραιωμένες αντιλήψεις για τους παράγοντες, που παίζουν τον καθοριστικό ρόλο.

     Σημάδι, γούρι (καλός οιωνός), προσήμαδο (κακός οιωνός), «δεν το’ χω σε καλό παρατήρημα» (=προοιωνίζομαι δυσάρεστα, Κρήτη), «έχει καλό ανάχαρο» (Μεθώνη), μοιραίνω, μοιράρης, μοιράρισσα, ρίχτης, μάντης (= προφήτης, μάγος, που ασκεί και τη μαντική και τη μαγεία, οραματίζομαι(= ονειρεύομαι) και «ξεδιαλύνω τ’ όνειρο» είναι μερικές από τις συνηθισμένες λέξεις που χρησιμοποιούσαν για να δηλώσουν την προσπάθεια να μαντέψουν με διάφορα μέσα και τρόπους το μέλλον, άμεσα ή μακροπρόθεσμα.
