Η παρούσα έκδοση αφορά υλικό που έχει καταθέσει στο Αρχείο Χειρογράφων του Κέντρου Λαογραφίας η Αλίκη Λάμπρου, με θέμα «Ο αργαλειός στη Σκύρο» κατά το έτος 2008 (αριθμ. χειρογράφου 4847). Πρόκειται για τη συλλογή και καταγραφή υλικού με θέμα την υφαντική στη Σκύρο.

Κεντρικός άξονας του βιβλίου είναι οι γραπτές σημειώσεις της μητέρας της για την ύφανση συγκεκριμένων σχεδίων. Αυτές συμπληρώνονται από τις μνήμες αλλά και τις καταγραφές των σκυριανών υφαντριών (συγγενών και οικείων προσώπων στο σύνολό τους) για τον αργαλειό και τα υφαντά, στοιχεία από την αναδίφηση των τοπικών αρχείων και πλαισιώνονται από συγκριτικά στοιχεία με άλλες περιοχές, βιβλιογραφικές αναφορές σε θέματα που αφορούν την ύφανση και πλούσιο φωτογραφικό υλικό τεκμηρίωσης. Ο τόμος εμπλουτίζεται με πληροφορίες για τα είδη των νημάτων, την κατεργασία και τη βαφή τους, ενώ συνοδεύεται από ένα συνοπτικό αλλά χρήσιμο τοπικό γλωσσάρι υφαντικής.

Η έκδοση, με αναφορά στη Σκύρο, επιχειρεί να συμβάλει στη σύνθεση μιας πληρέστερης εικόνας για τον αργαλειό και την υφαντική τέχνη ευρύτερα. Αφορά ουσιαστικά στην πληρέστερη καταγραφή και γνώση της τοπικής μνήμης και παράδοσης και συμβάλει, στο μέτρο που αναλογεί, στη συγκρότηση του «αρχείου» της λαογραφίας.

Ο τόμος φιλοξενείται στην εκδοτική σειρά «Πηγές του Λαϊκού Πολιτισμού» που ιδρύθηκε από την τέως διευθύντρια του Κέντρου Αικατερίνη Πολυμέρου-Καμηλάκη το 2002, απευθύνεται στο ευρύ κοινό και έχει ως σκοπό την παρουσίαση και έκδοση με επιστημονική επιμέλεια αδημοσίευτου λαογραφικού υλικού, που φυλάσσεται στα αρχεία και τις συλλογές του Κέντρου, σε συνεργασία κυρίως με φορείς της Τοπικής Αυτοδιοίκησης και του πολιτισμού. Μέχρι σήμερα έχουν κυκλοφορηθεί, πάντοτε με δαπάνες των ενδιαφερομένων φορέων, δώδεκα τίτλοι σε 13 τόμους και 18 δίσκους πυκνής έγγραφής (CD, DVD), ενώ προετοιμάζονται τουλάχιστον οκτώ νέες εκδόσεις.
