     Τα Χριστούγεννα κάθε νοικοκυρά με ιδιαίτερη φροντίδα παρασκεύαζε το χριστόψωμο. Συνήθως το σχήμα του είναι στρογγυλό και στη μέση της επιφάνειάς του κολλούν ένα σταυρό από ζυμάρι.  Στο κέντρο και τις άκρες του σταυρού βάζουν καρύδια και αμύγδαλα, σύμβολο πλούσιας καρποφορίας.  Ο διάκοσμός του έχει και συμβολική σημασία και είναι ανάλογος με την ασχολία του νοικοκύρη: βόδια, αλέτρι και αλώνι για το γεωργό, πρόβατα, κατσίκια και στάνη για τον τσοπάνο.  Χαρακτηριστικό ήταν το χριστόψωμο των Σαρακατσάνων, του ποιμενικού και νομαδικού αυτού πληθυσμού με ολόκληρη στάνη πάνω του.  Οι Σαρακατσάνοι έφτιαχναν και ένα άλλο ακόμα ψωμί «την τρανή χριστοκουλούρα» για τα πρόβατά τους, για να τα ευλογήσει ο Χριστός.

     Στη δυτική Μακεδονία κάνουν και τις «κολιαντίνες», μικρά χριστόψωμα για τα παιδιά που λένε τα κάλαντα.
 
     Το χριστόψωμο έχει εξέχουσα θέση στο χριστουγεννιάτικο τραπέζι το οποίο σε αρκετά μέρη στρώνεται από την παραμονή.  Λέγεται και τραπέζι της Παναγιάς.  Στη Θράκη και τη Μακεδονία το λένε και «τα εννέα φαγιά», επειδή σ’ αυτό πρέπει να υπάρχουν εννιά ειδών φαγητά.  Σε κάποιες περιοχές το τραπέζι που στρώνουν την παραμονή δεν το σηκώνουν, μόνο το σκεπάζουν και το αφήνουν για να φάει ο Χριστός.
