Απεβίωσε, πλήρης ημερών, ο εθνολόγος Νίκος Παπαγεωργίου και η κηδεία του πραγματοποιήθηκε σε στενό οικογενειακό κύκλο, στο Κοιμητήριο της Καισαριανής την Τρίτη 17 Ιανουαρίου 2017. Ο Νίκος Παπαγεωργίου (γενν. 1913) σπούδασε εθνολογία στα Πανεπιστήμια Columbia και Brandays (Η.Π.Α.). Εργάστηκε στην UNESCO και συμμετείχε σε επιστημονικές αποστολές στην Άνω Αίγυπτο, στην Ασία και ιδιαιτέρως στο Θιβέτ καθώς και σε πολλές χώρες της Νοτίου Αμερικής. Υπηρέτησε ως αντιπρόεδρος της Ελληνικής Εθνικής Επιτροπής UNESCO και ήταν μέλος του Διεθνούς Συμβουλίου Μουσείων της UNESCO και της Ελληνικής Λαογραφικής Εταιρείας. Συγκέντρωσε, με πολλά ταξίδια ανά τον κόσμο, εθνογραφικές συλλογές με αντικείμενα από όλο τον κόσμο (μουσικά όργανα, διακοσμημένα αυγά, τάματα, μάσκες κ.ά.). Συνεργάστηκε με το Κέντρο Λαογραφίας της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών σε επιστημονικά θέματα, ήδη από την δεκαετία του 1960 (με τον τότε διευθυντή Γ. Κ. Σπυριδάκη) και στην συνέχεια με την Αικατερίνη Πολυμέρου-Καμηλάκη, επί της διευθύνσεως της οποίας δώρισε σημαντικό μέρος της συλλογής του στο Κέντρο Λαογραφίας (Συλλογή αυγών, ταμάτων, μουσικών οργάνων). Tο Κέντρο Λαογραφίας οργάνωσε ειδικές εκθέσεις («Διακοσμημένα Αβγά απ’ όλο τον Κόσμο», Κέντρο Λαϊκής Τέχνης και Παράδοσης του Δήμου Αθηναίων - Σπίτι της Αγγελικής Χατζημιχάλη, Απρίλιος-Αύγουστος 2011, «Του κόσμου τα τάματα», Ελληνοαμερικανική Ένωση, 2-22 Δεκεμβρίου 2010) και επιστημονικές ομιλίες σε συνεργασία με τον εκλιπόντα. Τα τελευταία χρόνια του βίου του είχε αφιερωθεί στην συγγραφή βιβλίων εθνολογικής θεματολογίας (τάματα, μάσκες κ.ά.).
